On line Doctorate Degrees: Never Stop Learning …

…even if your five year plan didn’t exactly work out

Once I finished my Master’s degree the last thing I wanted to do was enter a doctoral program.  Which is how most students feel, and that’s fine–it’s a good idea to get out in your field and get some solid, hands-on career experience before you head back to the classroom again.

I had a five year plan, you know.  I’d get established, do some independent research, maybe write a few articles, and then I’d go back.  But somehow five years turned into seven years, and somewhere in between I got married, bought a house, had a couple of kids… I hadn’t exactly included all of that in my “five year plan” so I kissed my dream of getting my PhD goodbye–until, that is, I learned about on line doctorate degrees.

and found out they were the real deal…

I know what you’re thinking, and believe me–I had the same reaction at first.  “Uh-huh.  On line doctorate degrees? You mean on line diploma mills, right?”  But my colleague assured me that’s not what he meant.  I nodded along, but I did my own research as soon as I got home.  I checked out some accreditation info on the Department of Education site and… lo and behold, there are on line doctorate degrees.

So I started some applications…

And now I’m starting my disseration. Yep.  I opted for one of the programs that offered accelerated coursework, so my classes didn’t take that long.  After all, I work in academia already and I’m well-familiarized with research methods and theories.  Now I’m neck deep in my own research, and being reminded of what it’s like to stay up all night reading, making frantic calls to my advisor… and loving every single second of it!
