Psy.D. VS Ph.D. in Psychology

Psy.D. VS Ph.D. in Psychology, Which is Better?

In the specific and versatile field of psychology, bachelor’s degree holders will have limited prospects, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is a clear-cut implication that a graduate psychology program is a critical recommendation in order to make one who already has achieved a bachelor’s degree in psychology more marketable for employment. However, the decision to pursue post-graduate studies can be befuddling and misleading, especially if the individual does not have a plan or the time to continue.

Psy.D. VS Ph.D. in Psychology

Psychology Graduate Programs

Psychology, just like most majors, offers extensive graduate programs at many institutions across the nation. Prior to even being accepted to graduate school, he or she must carefully decide if they want to work as a psychologist in a clinical setting (private practices) or practical work (examinations) rather than dissertations. Please take note that there is more than one way in achieving a professional doctorate in psychology, but the most popular routes are the Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) and Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology (Ph.D.).

PsyD in Psychology

A Doctor of Psychology is the highest degree for those who desire in applying their knowledge as a practicing clinician. There is a high emphasis of technicality for an individual with a Psy.D., because its intention is to prepare graduate students for real world, or hands-on application. Most Psy.D. programs tend to endure 4 to 7 years to complete (5 years on average).

All students pursuing a doctorate in psychology are required to participate in supervised practicum placements in various clinical atmospheres during their training followed by a supervised clinical internship. When a Psy.D. is finally rewarded, the individual must have at least two years of supervised internship and a state license before he or she can begin working on their own.

Once all of these requirements are met, a psychologist with a Psy.D. will have lucrative career options in practitioner-based fields such as teachers, private practices, and carry out administrative responsibilities. They can also teach or conduct psychology research, but the majority frequently works in applied settings to provide direct mental health services.

PhD in Psychology

A psychologist with a Ph.D. is more oriented towards research rather than clinical application, even though both seem to be similar in many ways. Typically, schooling for a Ph.D. will take about 5 to 7 years to complete (an average of 1 to 1.5 years longer versus a Psy.D.), depending on the institution. In addition, to regular coursework, the individual will be expected to complete an internship or supervised residency (similar to the requirements of a Psy.D.).

The program usually culminates in the completion of an original research project or dissertation (a thesis or long essay). A PhD will also give the individual the opportunity to make middle to high 5-digit salary. The majority of PhD holders will be qualified to work as clinical psychologists at private practices as a clinical psychologist or counselor. On top of that list, they can also teach at universities, work at a research or medical facilities, be employed by the government, or work as a school psychologist.

Summary

Each degrees has its delicate differences and the decision to pick one path over the other depends on one’s career goals and personal preferences. Regardless, to achieve doctorate in the field of psychology will substantially put an individual at advantage, compared to a limited undergraduate, who only has a bachelor’s degree in psychology.
