Distance Learning PhD HistorySearching for a Distance Learning PhD History program?

Want to become a major historian but don’t have time for a lengthy PhD program? Many professional adults find themselves in this predicament. Many have professional and family commitments that do not allow them to attend a traditional PhD program. Thankfully, there are a few universities starting to offer distance learning PhD history programs.

Unfortunately, the number of 100 percent online PhD programs in history is miniscule. More and more programs are slowly popping up, however. Some programs combine distance learning with a few campus based visits. The residency requirements will vary according to the university and program.

Of the true online programs, the requirements are the same as a traditional program. Students will have to complete a series of courses and a dissertation on original research. Depending on the area or specialty, students are required to complete 18-20 courses, including American history, European history, colonialism, and comparative history.

Upon successful completion of all courses and perhaps an all inclusive exam, students will start work on their research project and dissertation. Typically during the coursework, students will take different courses on the methodology of research and may submit their proposals for approval. This portion of the program is typically self directed.

Upon graduation, many students go on to work in politics, writing, and at museums. They also become leading researchers and professors at the collegiate level. With the number of online programs growing quickly, it is important to check with your university of choice to get their latest up to date offerings.
