Searching for Distance PhD Programs?

With the advent of the internet, getting an education has taken on an entirely new look and feel. Students no longer have to show up to a specific classroom, on a specific day, at a specific time. Students have more say in how and when they work on their studies. This allows for busy, professional adults to get their education with minimal disruption to their work and family commitments. There are even distance PhD programs!

Distance PhD Programs

What is distance learning? It is simply defined as it is sounds. It is getting an education where your professors are in another location. Most work is done from the comfort of the students own home. The technology used in the program will vary but include video conferencing, DVDs, teleconferencing, webcasts, and printed materials. Students will typically communicate with other students and the professor via a discussion board, chat, and email.

A distance PhD program is typically an online program. However, there may be some video conferencing as well. The majority of the coursework will be done online with minimal residential requirements. Most programs will require that the student perform a few short on campus residencies.

There is a common misconception that distance PhD programs are not at the same standard and do not have the same requirements that a traditional program does. This is not true, however. Accredited online and distance programs require that students perform the same coursework and write a dissertation prior to graduation.
