About Distance Education PhD Programs
A PhD degree is a research degree that includes coursework, internships, and independent research, analysis of data, and instructional theory. Online PhD program graduates are typically employed in university or research-based work environments. Thus, an Online PhD is based on original research and may require the completion of residency requirements (each online school will define their residency requirements if they exist). Online PhD candidates are also required to complete a dissertation upon successful completion of the program coursework. This phase of the PhD program is typically referred to as ABD (All But Dissertation).
