Distance PhD: Online Education in a Shrinking World

Online education has made getting a distance PhD possible.

When you were looking at undergraduate programs, geography probably wasn’t your first concern, was it?

Well, let me rephrase that.

You weren’t so worried about geographical distance being something that would hold you back.  Unless, of course, it was not enough distance.  You didn’t want to be close enough for mom and dad to drop by on their way home from the offices, right?

If you got your master’s right after you got your bachelor’s, maybe you weren’t worried about distance then either; if you went into the workforce first, though, and then got your master’s it was probably more of a concern.  But it wasn’t that hard to find a program in commuting range.

But getting your PhD is a whole different kettle of fish.  Finding a program in your field, at a university you actually respect, and within a reasonable distance to commute is pretty unlikely–unless of course, you’ve relocated there already.

For those who haven’t, getting a distance PhD may be the answer.

Distance PhD?

You can actually enroll in doctoral programs at many prestigious universities where all coursework and the vast majority of your other communications are carried out online.  While bachelor’s and master’s online programs may have no attendance or residency requirements, a distance PhD program probably will have some–but they’ll be designed specifically for distance learners in mind.

Some distance learning PhD programs, for example, have several 4 day residency sessions which you can fulfill flexibly throughout your time in the program; others have summer sessions for residency that may be a few weeks long.  Either way, it’s a huge improvement over having to completely uproot your family and abandon your career.
