On line Doctoral Degree Programs: Who makes a good candidate for an on line doctoral degree?
Wondering if you’ve got what it takes to get your doctoral level degree online? So are a lot of other people. First things first, though–do you make a good candidate for any type of doctoral level degree?
Who makes a good candidate for doctoral level study?
First, a strong foundation in your field of expertise. Getting your PhD isn’t about learning the basics–or even learning about your field in depth. You’ve already done that, if you’re a potential candidate for these types of programs. Instead, your focus will be research–in essence, adding to the body of knowledge in your field of study.
For that you need great research skills, great writing skills, and an inquisitive, analytical mind.
You don’t necessarily need to have a master’s degree to enter an on line doctoral degree program (some require it, some don’t) but you should still have an excellent academic background–and you’ll still probably be required to take the GRE, and possibly one of the GRE subject tests as well.
Factors you should consider when applying to an on line doctoral degree program:
If you can confidently agree with the above requirements, now it’s time to think about the aspects of on line doctoral degree study in particular. Are you self motivated and good at prioritizing your time? Those are musts for any academic program, of course, but with an on line program you don’t have as much environmental motivation. Are you going to be able to get off the couch and get to work, even knowing your advisor isn’t lurking around the corner? If so, then an on line doctoral degree program may be the right choice; if not, you might want to consider a traditional program first.
