What to Expect from an Accounting PhD Program

Doctoral study is much different than what you experience in studying for your bachelor’s, or even master’s degree.  Programs also vary to a certain extent from field of study to field of study, and from university to university.  So if you are considering an accounting PhD program, it’s wise to do some research so you know what to expect.  There are the general expectations for PhD study to consider, as well as those specific to accounting programs.  And of course, you’ll need to investigate the programs offered by the universities you’re considering, in detail, before you apply for admission.

What Qualifications should Applicants Have to be Considered for an Accounting PhD Program?

This varies from school to school.  You may be surprised to know that many PhD programs do not specifically require you to hold a master’s degree to enter, although they will require the minimum of a bachelor’s degree.  That doesn’t mean you don’t “need” a master’s degree level of understanding or dedication, however.

Your career experience will play some part in your acceptance or lack thereof as well.  Accounting PhD program admissions are looking for strong candidates who show the dedication and commitment to their field which will make them well-suited for the rigor of PhD study.

How is PhD Study Different from Master’s and Bachelor’s Study?

Doctoral study has much more emphasis on research than either master’s or bachelor’s degree programs, and this research is often not restricted to researching sources.  Many doctoral programs require their candidates to conduct original research in the field and complete a dissertation which is worthy of being published and the average accounting PhD program is no exception.  Doctoral study goes being simple, practical applications of knowledge and delves into exploration of the theories that those in the field of focus utilize in their work.
