Distance Education Ph D

Distance Education Ph D: Creating Opportunities

I’d often dreamed of getting my Ph D.  Not just of having the diploma, but the process itself.  Researching, writing, being in communication with some of the best minds in my field… and finally, of course, counting myself among them.

But until I realized a distance education Ph D might be an option, I thought it was just an idle fantasy.

It had never really crossed my mind that distance learning might have made getting my Ph D a possibility, but it turned out… it is.

I’m sure you’ve heard about distance learning too, I mean, who in academia hasn’t?  But I’d been out of school for a while and it was a surprise to me to hear that you could even get your BA or BS entirely online.  That’s when a friend of mind told me she was getting her MFA through distance education, and that I should consider getting a distance education Ph D.

See, the main reason I hadn’t gotten my Ph D already was location.  I live about 150 miles from any university that has a program in my field.  I own my own home.  I’m married.  I can’t just uproot and relocate for a few years.  But with my distance education PhD program, I didn’t have to.

And that’s what’s so great about distance learning.  Yes, I did have to go for a few short residency sessions–4 days to a week, each semester–but that was doable.  I didn’t have to spend hours a day commuting.

And my distance education Ph D was absolutely everything I dreamed getting my PhD would be–and more.  Other than the fact that I didn’t have to relocate or commute, the program was the same as a traditional PhD program in every way.  So if you believe you can’t get your PhD because you can’t handle a big move, think again and look into distance education options.
