The Internet and all of the accompanying technological breakthroughs it has ushered in have completely revolutionized the concept of distance learning, which itself has revolutionized the rather outdated concept of study via correspondence.

Distance learning is now a dynamic, interactive method of teaching and learning, and for some time has become more influential in higher education.  In recent years, there have been programs developed by a number of colleges and universities allowing students to complete entire associates, bachelors, and masters degrees online.  And now, you can apply for online, distance learning Ph D programs as well.

What Makes Distance Learning Ph D Programs Different?

While distance learning doctoral study is the same in most essential ways to traditional programs which culminate in Ph D degrees, there are some significant differences which you should consider.

First, there are of course the usual advantages that come with distance learning.  Due to the high specialized nature of doctoral study, many aspiring Ph D candidates have, in the past, been compelled to commute long distances, or even relocate, in order to find a Ph D program in their field which met their particular needs.  Distance learning programs eliminate this necessity, although some do have limited residency requirements.

However, there are some aspects of distance learning that may compound Ph D candidates’ challenges.  For example, while there is a great deal to be said for the convenience of studying from home and having only limited residency requirements to fulfill, this also means that the opportunity to participate in a teaching fellowship is limited or completely eliminated.  This is worth noting, because many Ph D candidates use teaching fellowships to offset the cost of their education, as most doctoral programs do not offer need-based financial assistance to students.
