People are going back to school, seeking out their masters and PhD programs so they can move up in their current careers. This is hardly surprising, as the job market becomes ever more competitive, with limited positions open in a recession. But to know if this is the right choice for you, you need to know what masters and PhD programs are.

What is a Masters Degree?

A masters degree is a level of education that prepares a student for the professional level of any career. Someone with a masters will be more likely yo be put up for a position within upper management, such as a CFO or CEO, or anything related to executive ranks. A masters is usually needed to move up from middle management, which is usually possible with a bachelors, a step below.

What is a PhD?

A PhD is a level of education and certification a step above a masters, and the highest level that can be given. It is a doctorate, and can be used either as proof of the highest available education, or for a research oriented position. It is also needed for the higher levels of academia, such as becoming a professor or administrative staff member at a university.

There are a number of universities that have these. However, more people are making the move of switching to an online university. This is done in order to allow them to more easily work while they seek out advanced degrees. You can use an online school to get a degree in your own time, often using accelerated courses.
