National Universities with the Best Value
Most colleges and universities today offer grants, scholarships, financial aid, and other forms of monetary support to their students. National universities with the best value education are the ones that offer the biggest discount to their students and the ones that offer the most number of financial aids to their students. US News & World Report has compiled this data to gives us a clearer picture.
The national universities with the best value today are the following:
- Harvard University – 73%
- Yale University – 72%
- Princeton University – 68%
- Stanford University – 70%
- Massachusetts Institute of Technology – 66%
- Columbia University – 66%
- Dartmouth College – 65%
- California Institute of Technology – 58%
- Duke University – 61%
- University of Pennsylvania – 58%
- University of Chicago – 58%
- Rice University – 56%
- Brown University – 59%
- University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill – 51%
- Cornell University – 55%
The percentage stated is the average discount from total cost that each student receiving a grant gets. As you can see, Harvard University students who receive need-based grants get almost a 3/4 discount on their expenses. The same is true with Yale University students. Princeton is fourth in the list and comes before Stanford because the former has a bigger percentage of students that receive need-based grants. Around 56% of Princeton students receive need-based grants in contract to only 46% in Stanford. On the other hand, 57% of students at Harvard are given financial support.
US News & World Report used a unique methodology to come up with this list. Three variables were factored in to make the ranking. The first was the quality of education to price. Quality was based on the overall score of the schools in the America’s Best Colleges for the year. The second variable used the percentage of students getting need-based grants and the third was the average discount given to those who do.
