Considering an  online PhD in business?

If you’ve recently become intrigued by the possibility of earning an online PhD, good for you.  Online degrees are becoming more and more popular with students, especially returning students or those who are balancing a career against scholastic pursuits.

However, you should carefully consider the level of discipline, commitment, and determination required to earn your PhD.  Just because an online PhD in business program offers you the chance to earn your PhD without physically attending classes doesn’t mean it’s going to be a piece of cake.

Unless you decide to go the route of buying your PhD from a diploma mill–not the most ethical course–you’re going to have to carefully investigate what your online PhD in business will require from you.

A PhD can be a huge step forward in your career.  But they’re not easy to earn.  Unlike bachelor’s, or even master’s degrees, your program probably won’t offer need-based financial aid, even if you’d qualify if it were an undergrad program.  Many PhD candidates help to pay their tuition costs by participating in paid teaching fellowships at the college where they study; obviously this isn’t an option if you aren’t attending a school in person.  So weigh the financial aspects carefully before enrolling.

And while you’ll be able to set your own schedule and study on your own time, around your work schedule, PhD programs typically require a large time commitment.  You might not have to compromise your career, but you’ll definitely be taking a chunk out of your leisure time.

Also, carefully check out whether or not the program has any residency requirements.  You’ll need to plan ahead if so–even an online PhD in business program may require some limited residency sessions, like several 4 day residencies.
