Online PhD Programs in Education: Broaden your career opportunities!

I love teaching.  I really do.  But after ten years of it, I was ready to take my career a step further.  The thing is, when you’re a teacher, and you’ve got your master’s degree, there’s only so far you can go, at least without relocating.  It’s not that I wasn’t qualified for some of the job openings, but competition in my region is fierce for upper-tier jobs in education.  I didn’t want to move, so my options were limited… I started looking at PhD study, but I figured I’d have to move for that too–until I came across an article (like this one, actually!) talking about online PhD programs in education.

But are they legitimate?

If that’s what you’re thinking, you’re not alone–it was the first thing that ran through my mind too, believe me.  It really seemed too good to be true.  But once I started looking at programs, I realized that there were legitimate online PhD programs in education.  Sure, there were some scammers too, but they were easy enough to sort out, just by checking accreditation.  But I wasn’t just looking for accreditation, of course.  I’m not going to commit to something as intense as a doctoral program without knowing it has some serious credentials.  Once I checked out the lists of alumni, and the faculty of some of the online PhD programs in education that caught my eye, though, my decision was made.

I didn’t have to relocate–I don’t even have to commute!

I got accepted to one of the online PhD programs in education I applied to.  I do head to the East Coast to attend a four day residency session every semester–it’s a way to connect with my instructors and meet my fellow PhD candidates–but that part is more fun than work, to be honest.  The rest of the time, I study and research right here–from home mostly, with a field trip to the library now and then.
